How to Respond to Uncertain Times
War is pain. No one wins when one country invades another.
I am not a political expert to give an opinion on Russia invading Ukraine. However, I am a concerned pastor. Concerned for the citizens of Ukraine and Russia who will suffer unnecessary casualties. And concerned for people all around the world who are weary.
Here’s what I know – Hold firmly to faith.
Here are four reasons faith can keep us calm as our world grows more uncertain.
1. Jesus predicted alarming events will take place.
Find strength in scripture.
Jesus was asked by his followers about the future. He responded, ‘you will hear of wars and rumors of wars but see to it that you are not alarmed.’ (Matthew 24:6) Jesus knew there would always be conflicts. Nations driven by greed and desire for power will eventually collide in battle. Don’t be surprised when there is war.
2. Endurance is developed through difficulty.
The ability to continue in the face of fear or danger develops endurance. Humans have a tendency to choose the path of least resistance, but we were created to be strong in adversity.
Endurance develops strength of character. Character renews hope.
3. Jesus assured those who endure to the end will be saved.
Faith is believing with an inherent trust and enduring confidence in the power, wisdom, and goodness of God. Again, Jesus predicted, “the love of many will grow cold, but the one who endures to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 24:13)
Hold firmly to faith.
4. We can respond by praying.
Prayer is communicating with God. We can pray for the leaders who have decision making authority to work towards peace. Pray for hearts to be turned towards God. Pray for protection over the innocent citizens who are inevitably caught in the crossfire.
May God have mercy on our world and our souls.
