You Are God’s Masterpiece
In my student teaching days, 8-year-old Johnny came running into the classroom with tears streaming down his face. The teacher, very concerned, said, “Johnny, what happened?!” Johnny replied, “Ruth called me ‘Mary Poppins!’”
The teacher asked, “Are you Mary Poppins?” to which Johnny replied, “No.”
And the teacher said, “Just because someone calls you something, it doesn’t mean that is who you are.”
When you know who you aren’t, it helps you be confident in who you are.
You aren’t the names you were called on the playground, you aren’t the cumulation of your worst moments, and you aren’t the things you like least about yourself. You are not an accident, a mistake, or a mess.
You are God’s masterpiece — his very best work.
It’s important to take God at his Word.
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. — Ephesians 2:8-10
You are God’s masterpiece — his very best work. You can’t become more or a less of a masterpiece.
We trust God to keep the sun in the sky, the earth rotating on its axis, to care for the sparrow. We trust God’s redemptive plan to be fulfilled in Jesus. We trust him enough to build our lives on his literal words. We can trust what he says about us to be true, we can take him at his word.
God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. — Psalm 18:30
Being God’s masterpiece says more about God than it says about you.
Being God’s masterpiece does not mean you’re perfect. In fact, you and me, we’re not even close. Yet, God chooses to invite us into relationship with him through our trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It’s wild.
How kind the Lord is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours! — Psalm 116:5
Because of his mercy, his compassion, his great love for us, because he is good, faithful and just, because he so willed, because of who God is — we are a friend not a foe, redeemed not abandoned, and a masterpiece not a mess.
