Spiritual Practices – Wk 1

1 Timothy 4:7 (NLT)

7 Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.

Psalm 1:1-6 (NLT)

1 Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with mockers.
2 But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

4 But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
5 They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
6 For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.

1. Remove the negative voices.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (AMP)

4 The weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood]. Our weapons are divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ,

2. Decide to delight in God’s instructions.

3. Adopt a new mindset.

Romans 12:2 (NIV)

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

COMMUNITY GROUP MEETING OUTLINE

Where your faith intersects with real life!

Reconnect:

Each person shares a recent high and low from their life.

Explore:

Review the message notes.

Big Idea: Meditating on scripture starts with detoxing your mind.

Consider:

Choose one or two questions for your Group to discuss as time allows.

▶ Read 1 Timothy 4:7-9. What toxin does your mind tend to drift toward most; comparison with others, crusading against something that isn’t right, being “in the know”, worry, or something else?

▶ Read Psalm 1:1-6. What has worked for you to remove negativity from your mindset?

▶ Read 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (AMP). Which mindset do you need to be aware of most: Abundance, Protection, Purpose, or something else? Are there any verses that come to mind that would be helpful?

Activate:

Spend a moment in silence to consider your response, then share your decision with the Group.

Read Romans 12:2 (NIV). Ask God what one prompt you need to heed to meditate on what He has for you?

Prayer:

Thank God for the highs and lift up the lows.

Ask God together for our church to grow in all the ways He has for us. As we move toward the new groups season, can you pray for new groups to form and for people to find their circles.
