Unobvious Idols: Wk 7

1 Peter 4:7 (ESV)

7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

HOW TO GUARD AGAINST CERTAINTY BECOMING AN IDOL:

1. Stay spiritually alert to ensure alignment with God.

1 Peter 4:1-6 (NLT)

1 So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. 2 You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. 3 You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.

4 Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. 5 But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. 6 That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead—so although they were destined to die like all people,  they now live forever with God in the Spirit.

2. Be resilient in the face of evil and troubles.

Psalm 34:11-19 (NLT)

11 Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord.
12 Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous?
13 Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!
14 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.

15 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.
16 But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil; he will erase their memory from the earth.
17 The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

19 The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.

3. Continue to use what you have to serve others.

1 Peter 4:7-11 (NLT)

7 The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. 8 Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.

10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. 11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

SMALL GROUP MEETING OUTLINE

Where your faith intersects with real life!

Reconnect:

Each person shares a recent high and low from their life.

Explore:

Review the message notes.

Big Idea: Certainty becomes an idol when you look to the things of this world to bring assurance more than Jesus.

Consider:

Choose one or two questions for your Group to discuss as time allows.

▶ Read Ecclesiastes 7:14. What were your initial thoughts on certainty being an unobvious idol?

▶ In which area do you crave certainty most – our nation, your home, your life, or something else?

▶ Read 1 Peter 4:7 (ESV). Make a list together of practical ways we can stay spiritually alert to ensure alignment with God.

▶ Read Matthew 6:30. Share a story of a time when you felt God’s care for you personally.

Activate:

Spend a moment in silence to consider your response, then share with the Group.

Read 1 Peter 4:7-11. Ask God to show you a gift He has given you that He wants you to share in a new way this week.

Prayer:

Thank God for the highs and lift up the lows.

Read Psalm 34:15-19. Share prayer requests and then lift them up together.
